UTV, ATV or jeep in Aruba?

All three take you off the paved roads and into Aruba's wild side. They differ in who drives, how hard the ride is on your body, what they cost and whether they can get you to the Natural Pool.

On the north coast, all three use similar rough tracks to the same ruins and beaches. The difference is in the seat you sit in.

Inside Arikok National Park the choice is made for you: only jeeps and trucks, horses and hikers are allowed, so ATVs and UTVs stay outside.

The quick answer

Pick a UTV to drive with friends or family side by side in a roll-caged vehicle (from $122 per person). Pick an ATV for the most physical, motorbike-like ride (from $109). Pick a jeep if you would rather be driven, or want the Natural Pool (from $99).

What is the difference between a UTV, an ATV and a jeep?

A UTV is a side-by-side with seats and a steering wheel, an ATV is a quad bike you straddle, and a jeep tour is an open 4x4 driven by a guide.

Which is the most comfortable?

The jeep, then the UTV; the ATV is the hardest on your body.

A UTV has seats, seat belts and a roll cage, so you sit rather than grip. One rider called steering the quad a challenge, and the ATV listing asks for moderate fitness. None of them is gentle: the flagship listing warns off guests with back problems, heart conditions and pregnancy, and De Palm advises against back or kidney problems and pregnancy.

Which is the most fun?

For most groups the UTV: you drive, you can talk to each other, and you can take the whole family in one vehicle.

Thrill seekers who want to feel every bump pick the ATV. If you would rather look at the view than the track, the jeep wins.

Which one goes to the Natural Pool?

Only jeeps, the self-drive 4x4 convoy and horses can reach Conchi; ATVs and UTVs are banned in Arikok National Park.

Combo tours bridge the gap by switching you from a UTV to a truck at the park. See UTV tours and the Natural Pool for which tours do what.

Which is the cheapest?

The jeep safari, from $99 per person, then the ATV from $109 and the per-person UTV tour from $122.

Per-vehicle UTV tours cost $220 to $349 for two people. Jeep tours into the park usually add the park fee. Full numbers in UTV tour prices.

Which is best for families?

A UTV for families with kids 4 and up, or a jeep for younger children and anyone who should not ride a rough track.

The 2 to 5 seater UTV tour takes passengers from age 4, and a 4-seater keeps the family together. The ATV tour starts at age 6. See UTV tours with kids.

What about horseback?

Horseback is the quiet alternative, and one of the few ways to the Natural Pool with the park fee already paid.

The ride suits beginners; riders must weigh under 220 lb, and children ride from age 8.

Fancy a slower pace? The horseback ride reaches the Natural Pool with park fees included.

Frequently asked questions

Is a UTV safer than an ATV?

A UTV has seat belts and a roll cage, and you sit inside it, which most riders find more secure than straddling a quad.

Can I drive a UTV in Aruba without a tour?

Rental UTVs exist, but they are still banned inside Arikok National Park. A guided tour knows which tracks are open.

Is a jeep tour bumpy?

Yes, the tracks are rough, but you sit in a bigger vehicle and someone else does the driving.
